Established in 1987 as the Malaysia Materials Science & Technology Society (MMS) and rebranded as IMM in 1997, the institute is governed by a council comprising industry experts and dedicated volunteers. This council oversees various specialized committees and regional chapters nationwide. A central objective of IMM is to equip individuals in Malaysia with the competencies necessary to attain professional certification and recognition in the field. Additionally, IMM actively promotes research and fosters strategic collaborations among industry, academic institutions, and research organizations.

IMM’s certification programmes are highly regarded across key industries, including oil and gas, shipbuilding, construction, and transportation. These programmes have produced a wide spectrum of certified professionals, such as blasters, painters, coating inspectors, welding engineers, and corrosion technicians. Delivered through Authorized Training Bodies, these certifications significantly enhance workforce employability, career progression, and income potential.
